Springboard for Children is an educational charity which seeks to combat the disaffection, alienation and frustration experienced by barely literate primary school children in deprived inner city areas.
• Their aim is to challenge the effects of underachievement in deprived inner city areas and break the cycle of frustration and failure that can have a detrimental effect on children’s life chances. They work in dedicated rooms within primary schools to provide the neediest children with the opportunity to learn essential literacy skills that will enable them to access the National Curriculum and fulfill their academic potential. They offer schools a programme of intensive, tailor- made multi-sensory, one-on-one literacy tuition, delivered by dedicated qualified tutors and trained volunteers.
• The Duchess of York has shown her ongoing support to Springboard for Children as Patron, doing various things, from signing books for the children, to donating her own children’s books to the units, to helping to write recipe books to raise money for the charity, to visiting the units.
